Backstory: At the end of a protracted war, the widowered King Magnus the Strong of Alluria, took as his second wife, the elven princess, Thalasia. Prince Colember was third in line to the throne, and raised to the church at a young age, trained in combat and church teachings. He grew weary of the restrictions of the church and court and joined up with his father's armies to seek his fortune. He distinguished himself with honor on the field, though he grew weary of warfare. He resigned his commission, and set out in the world to see what good he could do.
Outside of his father's lands, he longed for a place to belong. He had little wish to return to his father's court where, although loved by his parents, his relations with his half-siblings was strained. He turned to dissolute living, his skills losing their edge and him feeling quite dead inside. He fell in with some rather unsavory folks. He learned just how unsavory when they introduced him to Duke Ignatius, a man of foul reputation in Alluria, long in exile. The Duke revealed his plan to the young man. Hoping to seize on the despondent Colember's dormant ambition, the Duke had a plan to usurp the throne, leaving Colember as the King, and Ignatius as his trusted advisor. Ignatius promised Colember to introduce him to dark beings who would show him real power.
Horrified, Colember played along long enough to gain knowledge of the traitors in his father's court, then took his leave of the Duke. Returning home, he privately exposed the traitors to his father, saving his family from the potential queue. He then took up a position as his head father's personal guard, but privately acting as a bit of a spymaster and counter-intelligence expert. It was this experience that caused him to be recommended for the special team that was forming.
No one applies to be a member of the Iustus Umbrani. You know that you are chosen when the voice speaks to you in the night. Certain folk have loyalty and integrity deep enough for the Dark Justice to visit and test them, Emeni was one of the youngest.
Sometimes justice is not done in the light. While they are not evil, the members of Iustus Umbrani know that hard decisions need to be made in dire times. The IU do not work for gold, though they are compensated for their work. They walk the fine line between justice and revenge. Called dark angels by some, and devils by others, they know that what they do is for the good of the people. Often recruited/hired by an organization like the strike team because of their skill in espionage and stealth.
Emeni was taken from his parents and will never be allowed to see them again. This is accepted and even though it is hard it is a great honor to be chosen. Like most monasteries life is hard and full of discipline. Emeni thrives under these circumstances. One fault of his is that he watches his family from a distance under the cover of darkness or in disguise.
Race: Human(variant) w/ Magic Initiate (flavored as half-Firbolg if that's okay)
Class: Druid
Background: Spy
Backstory: Varis's mother was a Firbolg, who happened to find a human ranger living by the edge of her home forest. They fell in love, but the rest of her tribe didn't think such a relationship would be safe. But as they were discussing how to deal with the situation, an Archfey appeared and told them she would bless the couples marriage. The Firbolg knew it was not wise to go against an Archfey, so they let the matter drop. In exchange, it asked the couple to give her their first born son upon his maturity, to become her agent in the world.
So. the pair soon had a son. Though the family lived by the edge of the forest, the kid became interested in his mothers race. She taught him what little she knew of Druidic skills, and the child took to it like a duck to water. They decided to send him to the tribe for leaning, and he became quite gifted indeed. As he aged more, it was also learned he had some innate magical powers similar to a Firbolg's, but somewhat different.
Finally, it came the time of his majority, and the Archfey collected her dues. He was told to travel the world, gather secrets for her, and write them into a blank journal he was given. Once written, the words would soon disappear to keep them secrets. He was told not to share any secrets sent to her, but he didn't have to send all the secrets he found to her. Indeed, she actually preferred mundane secrets, like cheating husbands, to stuff like military secrets and the like. So, as he was to learn to find secrets anyways, he might as well make a career out of it. Eventually he got caught, but his victims were impressed and offered him a place in a strike team instead of throwing him into jail.
Varis Nailo - Human Variant Rouge-Mastermind (will multi-class into fighter)
Used XGtE to determine character back story and then filled in the blanks.
So, let me get this straight. You want to know if I am a good fit for the elite soldier program? Ok that is a bit odd but if it gets me a job then so be it.
I am the oldest of four siblings. We were raised by my aunt and uncle after my mother was killed by what appeared to be a dragon. I know what it sounds like, but we found a dragon’s bony talon still stuck in her flesh. My father took off after that. We think he went to hunt the thing down, but we don’t know for sure. He was an Atilliator for the lord, but he was not a fighter. He could use the crossbows he made but I could never see him using them to hunt down a creature.
But as I was saying, with both our parents gone my four brothers and sisters moved in with my aunt and uncle. Uncle Orrian was a sailor so he was gone a lot and Aunt Sumina was glass blower who spent most of her day working.
The best thing about living there was I met Alea Eillar. The most amazing and beautiful young woman. We had a bit of a thing going but she had a destiny. At least she believed so. She entered the church as an acolyte and my dumb lovestruck ass followed. I so did not belong there, but I wanted to be near her.
Things were going good till I screwed them up. What I did not know was the temple was warded and under constant attack from unseen forces. Every night we had to close off the paneled shutters that would let the cool air in but nothing else.
I had snuck up to her window to spend some time with her. I talked her into opening her shutters and giving me a quick kiss before I had to leave. The next morning, she was dead. Strangled to death in her private locked chamber, the markings indicate a tentacle not a hand or rope. I was devastated. By talking her into opening the shutter something got in. We never saw it but it was there. It killed her.
After the event I was not in the mood to be there. I had a lot of anger in me. Lucky for me Luvon Carixsis came to me. He saw in me the need to confront evil more directly. He took me out of the basic acolyte training and started training me to fight. To sneak in and kill enemies of the church, to hunt down evil and crush it. I took to it well and I was determined to get vengeance for Alea. It has been a few years but Luvon says I am ready. What say you?
