I am recruiting for a home brew campaign. The campaign will take place in the western half of the Kwalmendi continent (see map below). The campaign will begin in a tavern outside of the western gate to the city of Gillesburg. All PCs will start at 1 level. Only races and classes from the Player’s Handbook are acceptable, although subclasses from Xanather’s Guide to Everything can be used. Stats will be rolled, using 4d6, 1’s can be rerolled. Leveling will be experience point based.
New players are encouraged to apply. If you have questions, post them below.
The continent of Kwalmendi derives its name from the ancient empire that ruled most of the land mass over a thousand years ago. It is said that the Kwalmendi Empire was a place of peace and harmony, with orcs, dwarves, elves, humans, kobolds, and the other sentient races living in harmony.
But, then a catastrophe happened, an event that is lost in the mists of time. The Empire collapsed with the various races and groups turning to war immediately. For several hundred years, the only constant was strife. The continent was home to a large number of fortified cities and villages, with few alliances between neighboring settlements.
Around 700 years ago, Magref Kardagen became the chief of a small tribe in the Urtukk Steppes. Kardagen eventually conquered most of the western portion of the continent. The impenetrable Blokendrohl Forest covered the eastern portion of the continent, with the few military expeditions sent into the forest disappearing with nary a trace. The few soldiers who returned from those expeditions had gone mad before returning to the west. None ever completely recovered to their original mental state, and all of them refused to talk about their experiences in the forest.
Kardagen, his sons, and grandsons were able to drive the orcs, kobolds, hobgoblins and their ilk into the Blokendrohl Forest. For nearly 400 years, the Kardagen Empire held sway over the western portion of Kwalmendi. But, then in the Valenthorn Desert, a rebellion took place, with both the nomadic tribes and city dwellers banding together to drive the Kardagen troops out of the desert and east of the Belgrund Mountains. This rebellion led to the establishment of the Kingdom of Sanbeyonne in the Valenthorn Desert.
For most of the last 300 years, the Sanbeyonne Kingdom and the Kardagen Empire have engaged in intermittent warfare, with neither state able to best the other on the battlefield. The ongoing strife between the two kingdoms led to an additional rebellion on the Halveryn Peninsula. The seven major cities located on the Peninsula, the southern most portion of the Kwalmendi continent successfully rebelled and separated themselves from the Kardagen Empire about 200 years ago. Each of the seven cities established their own independent states, a situation that has held up to the present.
The last war fought between the Kardagen Empire and the Sanbeyonne Kingdom took place about 20 years ago, with a final bloody battle occurring on the plain south of the Belgrund Mountains. This battle decimated both armies, with neither state fully recovered from the carnage associated with that battle.
The city-states of Halveryn have become an economic power, relying upon the internecine warfare to remain independent. The city-states trade with both the Kardagen Empire and the Sanbeyonne Kingdom, serving as intermediaries between the two states.
As a result of the warfare, kobolds, orcs, and their brethren have moved back out of the Blokendrohl Forest, with a few groups settling as far west as the Belgrund Mountains.
Elvish communities can be found in the Ravenwyn Forest on the Halveryn Peninsula, in the Aracern Forest within the Valenthorn Desert, and in the Heligwyn Forest in the Tralbibo Valley. Dwarven communities are present in all of the major mountain ranges.
I will post an update later providing more details on Gillesburg.
If you are interested in joining the campaign, send me a message with the subject “Mercer’s Tavern”. Include in the message the die rolls for your character, the race and class of the hero, a brief character history, and a link to the character sheet.
I am looking for people who can post on a daily basis. I live on the west coast of the US, and will generally be posting between 7 and 10 in the evening (my time) M-F. My schedule is more open on weekends, and the posting schedule will vary depending upon the players posting.
Information on the City of Gillesburg (Where the adventure will be starting:
Gillesburg is a relatively small city-state located off the Bay of Storms. The town was originally located directly on the shore, but, 500 years ago, two hurricanes in a decade decimated the town, leaving to the establishment of a new town inland on Lake Gilles nestled in the hills. A canal was built to allow boats to travel from the Bay to the lakeside docks.
Much of the wealth of the city comes from trade with both Sanbeyonne and Kardagen. Trade is conducted via both ships and wagons.
The city is divided into five sectors, although the boundaries of the various sectors tend to blur together, except for the area where the nobles live. The bridges that connect the noble section with the adjacent sectors are guarded 24 hours a day to make sure that unwanted riff-raff don’t make it into that part of the town.
A wall was constructed around the city after the Kingdom of Sanbeyonne tried to conquer the town. The attack failed because the Kardagen Empire chose that moment to attack Sanbeyonne. The slums on the eastern edge of the city have now expanded out beyond the walls.
The city of Gillesburg is ruled by a Duke and a council of 9 members of each of the noble families. Each of the families has control of a single industry, with the Duke controlling banking in the town.
For rolling, when you roll 4d6, the drop the lowest score. I should have made that clearer. If you use the dice roller, the 3rd tab on the roller automatically drops the lowest die and will automatically reroll 1s for you.
