I am looking to DM my first Play by Post thread using an adventure done by a collaboration of Patreon creators (credit will be given in the main thread). The adventure is a healthy mix of role play, exploration, and combat. There will be good ole dungeon crawling, social encounters, and plot twists to dissect. The party will start off at level 7 and progress to level 9. It takes place in a homebrew world and will include some homebrew DM content. Adult content will be kept to a minimum, but swearing may be used. If you are interested, read the requirements below!
A Quest for the Shunned City For 500 years, two powerful celestials have held back a force of immeasurable evil from escaping the Realm Beyond into our world. Now, the celestials' power wanes, and soon...the aberrant creature will push its way into reality. Unleashed, the creature will leave only death and destruction in its wake. Fortunately, an ancient prophecy foretells that a group of heroes know as the True Last Couatl Heralds will join the celestials, and together, they will overcome the deadly creature, force it back into it own dimension, and save the world as we know it.
Platform: Primarily Dndbeyond PbP forum. Highly encouraged but optional discord server will be available for player questions, handouts, puzzle solving, and note taking of lore.
Players: 4-5 players.
Class/Race: No homebrew classes or races. Any UA material should be approved by me, otherwise any class or race available via Dndbeyond works fine.
Participation: I will be available M-F, weekends are hit and miss with my schedule and IRL d&d. I will post at a minimum of once a day during the week, likely more. For game flow purposes, I would expect at a minimum of one post a day. Being PbP can be slow at times, progression will be important as the adventure moves along. Participation will be key during peak times of combat, social encounters, and otherwise. Life happens, just let me know if you are unable to post and for how long. If you are away for more than 48 hours without notice your PC will be botted (communication will happen before this occurs).
Other things to communicate:
Primary game play will occur in the PbP thread, there will be dice rolling available in Discord if needed, especially for mobile users.
The party of 4 will be assumed as an existing party. A collaborate background will be determined before the adventure starts, keep this in mind when creating your PC background. The characters will start off in a town that they are well known and have done good works for.
There are "dungeon crawl" aspects of this adventure where traps, puzzles, and random encounters could occur. I will do my best to make maps and other resources available via the forum and/or discord. OOC communication should be in (parenthesis) to discuss next steps for these situations. I will do my best to wait for everyone's/majority input before posting an outcome.
Being my first PbP I DM, there WILL be bumps. Please communicate to me these bumps, whether it be against game play or the adventure, and I will handle them accordingly.
Given this is an adventure not created by me, reading the adventure material should be avoided. This is to keep everyone honest and keeps the adventure fun for everyone!
To join, please post the following information. Ability rolls will occur for those selected. I will keep this post open for a few days and make a selection of players on Wednesday or Thursday. I am in Ohio, USA. Timezone EST. Use this for time compatibility.
I was born/raised by friends of my parents, Ilanis Bareven (Neutral Elf Ranger) who works as an adventurer. My father disappeared, and my mother was enslaved. I am the youngest of 5 siblings (some full elf, others half-elves)-- one a politician, one an entertainer, one a laborer, one a fighter, and one a cleric. I picked up a musical instrument as a youth and discovered that I could play. I developed this talent in order to pay for my room and board -- working the streets as a performer. I have always had a keen insight into other people -- able to make them laugh or cry with my songs and stories.
This would be my first PbP game -- really hoping to find a group!
Brief PC background: Loom is of an order of paladins and monks that devote their lives to preparing for this inevitable day. She has trained to be a watcher and protector against alien powers. Where others run from danger she runs to it, protecting her friends and those around her.
Brief PC background: Cloak has a hard time knowing when the joke has gone to far. Daughter to sucessful gnomish jeweler's, her family didn't really help in that circumstance, encouraging her mischievous behavior her whole life, finding it cute. It probably went to far when she stole that old wizard's spell book and started teaching herself the spells inside, but he didn't seem to mind, told her to keep it and that even an impulsive girl like her would fine use with it eventually. So she did, and after a while learned how to use the secrets inside to cause even more mischief. Eventually she decided to go explore the world, curious to see what kind of mischief she could cause to them too.
Brief PC Backstory: Modron outsmarted his parents every time they wanted to put restrictions on him. He drove his siblings crazy with tricks and magical escapes. He always knew what was happening before they did and used his skills to show off or gain the advantage. His family and friends gave up trying to win any games or contests of wit against him because if he wasn't winning he would just magically find the right answer or turn over they right card that would move him into the lead. He was never malicious or evil and since gaining the little maturity someone of his temperament can gain he has applied his skills to detecting cheats, uncovering mischief and injustice and thwarting devious plans. He loves finding the answer when someone has been wronged and bringing to light the crimes and criminals.
Note that I created the above character with point buy. Once you have us roll I will use whatever roll rules you determine.
Brief PC background: Most Dragonborn fight for the glory of their clan and to resurrect their lost empire. But some Dragonborn are just humble farmers. Brazzak is an "aw shucks" farmboy who left the farm to join the army. Once the officers determined that he wasn't bright enough to ever make it past Private, they released him. He now finds work as an adventurer. Just a big ol' farmboy with an even bigger sword. Intelligence is a dump stat.
Doren Drummer - Human Variant - Warlock (Fiend, blade)- neutral
Drummer had been alone for many years. He was the caretaker of a noble family’s unoccupied land and residence far from most of civilization. It was a castle, some unremarkable acres of rocky fields and copses of trees. The castle consisted mostly of furniture and paintings covered by sheets, and chests full of out of date clothing. Few visitors, and a lack of stimulating work were not a problem for Drummer so long as he was paid. However... Drummer could swear things were being moved around when he wasn’t watching. One night on his way to bed, he saw one of the covers had fallen off one of the paintings. He went to put it up again, and noticed the painting was a horrible scene of a demon at the head of the table in this very castle. The demon almost seemed to be looking at him.
This occurred every night for three weeks. Drummer eventually determined he needed help. He found Hellish powers springing to life at his barest wish. As the powers sprung forth more chaotically, he found a book in the library detailing how to bind a demon into an object. Drummer found himself performing the rite, binding the demon to a cloak. For once, Drummer was free from the tearing at his soul, but changed had already been wrought. He didn’t know the full impact, but he couldn’t stay there any longer.
Drummer left, looking for an outlet for his abilities, and new needs. Needs for power, control, and victory in bloody combat. Struggling to be altruistic, he found people out looking to do some good as freelance seekers of fame, fortune, and destiny. And together, they managed to do quite a bit of good. Drummer has grown comfortable in his place with them and looks forward to their next adventure.
Background: Ardeth was given to the temple of his tribe because his family was unable to provide for him or contribute to the tribe. They were banished from the mountain, leaving Ardeth behind. As he grew into a young man he exhibited a unique skill to interpret the thunder. He could foretell of poor crops, raiding parties and diplomatic disputes with neighboring peoples. As an adult his skills further manifested into lighting magics. He heard the call from the thunder to leave the mountain in a quest to right the imbalance that is taking root in the world.
Brief PC background: Benagol was raised only by his mother in the poorest part of the city, since his father was pratically always in jail for petty thefts.
During his youth he was taking after his father, so in the end his mother sent him (almost by force) to join the army. So he acquired some warfare tactiques (especially with polearm weapons) and some little respect for authorities. After one year he left the army when the probation period ended. he is now looking for a great adventure and deeds, since he is intended not to end up like his father.
about me: I joined few PBP. I am ok for using DIscord. I am from Italy so, I dont know if you have read, but there is a kind of curfew becaus eof the virus and I am at home "smart working" and this month I will have plenty of time.
Note that I created the above character with point buy. Once you have us roll I will use whatever roll rules you determine.
Wow, there's a lot more interest than I anticipated. Currently 9 applications! I may end up doing 2 threads due to interest. I will move my final decision to 2PM EST today.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
DM - A Quest for the Shunned City (Groups 1 and 2)
Brief PC background: Broadbull left his herd at a young age and spent a major part of his life living alone in a small grove in the forest tending to, and defending the wildlife in the woods surrounding his hut. He mostly used his spare time whittling small totems representing each animal in the forest, keeping track of his furred, feathered and scaled friends.
Though the company of his critters is all he really needed he left the grove to be tended by a family of Dryads while he explored the world, expanding his ever growing collection of wooden animal figurines and even gaining a few humanoid friends along the way. Broadbull is very caring and gentle despite his large form and he does whatever he can to protect those around him.
Brief PC background: Valzes was born in a village far away from the city. She was a curious and adventurous kid since she was young. She always dreamt about leaving her village and exploring the world. Therefore, she left her village when she was 20. On the journey, she came across an ancient ruin in which she met a mysterious entity who struck a deal with her. She was given the power that could help her in her travel for a return of future favor.
Quinzi Hillsnarl - Human v (magic initiate) - Druid (land - grass) - Folk hero
Quinzi comes from village near the coast. Although slightly inland, it still must rely heavily on skilled individuals’ weather predictions due to tropical storms which come semi-frequently. Quinzi is one of the more skilled of these people and has been a cornerstone of strength for a relatively unimportant place. But now that word has reached him of the fate the world faces, he can’t sit and wait to see what happens. He’s gone looking to see how he can help.
