About the DM: I am a moderately experienced DM running what I think to be a fun game in here already. I also DM 2 in person games, one of which has not meet sense COVID started being a jerk. The other is me and my 2 sons, playing through this campaign, The Voyage of the Fallen star. That being said, my sons are 10 and 8, so we do a lot of the combat, and very little of the awkward RPing, they are trying to learn. So I have decided that I want to try and run the campaign here as a post by play.
How often do I post? Well most week days I post before lunch AZ time. Some days I get a chance to post a second or third time, but it all depends on the day. Weekends truly are a bit hit and miss. Kind of depends on what I have going on.
How will combat be ran? I run a PCs first creatures second rule. You post when you can, and I post combat actions of the creatures once every 24 hours, if you don’t post with in time then you forfeit that turn.
So what is the campaign?
There are few things in the world more rare or magical than a Fallen Star. Dislodged from its rightful home in the Astral Plane by some rare disturbance, this mote of pure magic has chanced to fall to earth. It is said among those that know, that whoever manages to find a Fallen Star will be granted a wish come true. The passage of the star across the sky was tracked by sages and diviners, whose best estimates place the Fallen Star somewhere in the Great Sea, far from land. From across the realm, adventurers take to the sea on the "Star Tide" - each hoping to find their fortune in the vast ocean of uncharted dangers. The party is about to gain an advantage in the hunt...in form of a long-lost relic that points the way to the star's resting place. Unfortunately, their lead won't last long. The sea reavers of Blackrift - a northern nation of evil warriors - is hot on their trail. What’s worse, the star has fallen into the heart of dragon territory and, Lux, the ancient red dragon matriarch, has her own plans for the star. It’s a race to the prize as the heroes island hop their way toward the unknown, where plunder and peril awaits, just beyond the edge of the map!
Starting at lvl 1 looking for 4-6 players

So is this a homebrew world? From the description, it seems a like a nautically themed campaign on the material plane? How about races, are there some that make more sense or are more common in the world (I am not a huge fan of exotic races appearing out of nowhere). Can you give some details on possible plot hooks, or where should the background lead the character with regards to the start of the campaign?
Edit: Are non min-maxy characters OK, or is the campaign more suited for optimized chars?

I have not homebrewed the world, it is from a third party who makes DnD adventures, called Dungeon in a Box. Yes there is a lot of ocean time. As far as races goes there is not one that I would say would "make more sense" of course that being said Dwarf, halfling, elf and human tend to be the most common of races. Where as gnomes, dragonborns, Drow, halforcs and Tieflings tend to be less common. As far as exotic races coming from nowhere I don't think as a game thats a problem, and for PCs I am of the idea that I am ok letting things that are in the rules go, but if you don't really work in the world then you better have a good backstory. Opening plot hook is getting a job request, from there the job is the most of the campaing, of course there are a few side things here and there that will be added in, and a few side shots that will take the party off the track of the game. I am good with non min-max characters the game will not be in such a way that it is needed. For me as a DM if that were the case I would have you only roll 5 stats and give you a free 18.

Im an old soldier of war who doesn’t really share much about myself. One of my traits is that I’m always polite and respectful. My ideal is that I Live and Let Live. Ideals aren’t worth killing over or going to war for. I fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. My flaw is that I made a mistake that will forever
Background: I joined the army after losing my family with my male friend, Alexander. We both made it through the war and wen our separate ways, and never heard from each other since.

I'm new to the site and had trouble with the dice rolls in my first post. (I failed to drop the lowest) After unsuccessfully attempting to edit them, I deleted the post and am re-rolling below.
