So I'm writing a character that is mostly a Twilight Cleric (Celestian), but I wanted her to take a few levels of Ranger so she could get a bear companion, an idea I got from the ASDF movies' character, "Desmond the Moon Bear." I was wondering if there was an actual Moon Bear, or something similar, or even a species of bear that resembled Desmond (from part 1 or 2) that could work as a Ranger companion.
It'll probably be a while before I get to play this character, I don't know who the DM will be, and if worse comes to worse I'll just do a black bear.
For reference, here's Desmond the Moon Bear parts 1 and 2.
Wow. I wasn’t familiar with the bear in question. I thought it might be from a show or movie. It wasn’t. LOL! Watching both videos took literally 10 seconds.
Beast of the land from Tasha’s would be the direction for that option. If you want or have to play from the PHB (my preferred way to go) then talk to your eventual DM about modifying stat blocks for NPCs. If you remove the multiattack feature from a black bear it drops to a CR 1/4. You can also change, add, remove, and/or replace quite a lot to a stat block without changing a creature’s CR rating, making it a legal option for the PHB beast master companion.
All of that has to be done or approved by the DM, but it’s fun, immersive, and if you do most or all of the legwork I’m confident that no reasonable will deny you your moon bear.
For example, switching out a wolf’s knockdown for an auto grapple, sans restraining effect, is a fun alternative and more useful for an archer or ranged combatant.

Tasha's Primal Companion let's you select the Beast of the Land, which you can flavor as literally anything you want.
You can also emulate that with the new Summon Beast spell from TCoE as well.
