Tolkien - Aragorn and others in his stories.
louis lamour - The Walking Drum ( also good for bards) other westerns of his help but aren’t as good.
William Johnstone - The First Mountain Man (Preacher) series
Robert Heinlein - Tunnel in the Sky
also a lot of hiking and camping and woods walking on my own.

John Wayne’s The Searchers
a lot of 60s and 70s fantasy fiction

I really love The Chronicles of Prydain, and the character Gwydion is very rangery in that series.

Agreed to some extent but even multiclass rangers help to see how the ranger part operates.

I remember some drow ranger with lavender eyes but it wasn’t terribly popular.
