My party needs a face for CoS, and I was originally thinking Rogue, then Bard, and now I'm considering Ranger too. Currently have a barbarian, cleric, and wizard - so no stealth or face.
Thoughts?
Fey Wanderer/Lore (or eloquence) bard multiclass?
Swarm keeper for summons?
Gloomstalker for spooky hiding?
I have no problem being a full support build, but if I'm relying on weapon damage at all, I'd want to go hand crossbow/crossbow expert most likely so I could hold a shield or cast spells as needed.
I think straight Fey Wanderer could be good, you will want to get one or two CHA skills from your background because Fey Wanderer only gives you prof with one between Deception, Performance, and Persuasion. You get to use WIS (in addition to CHA) on your CHA checks so you can still do all your Ranger things (stealth and spells) while also being a face. You also could put your main stat into WIS and take Druidic Warrior for attack cantrips instead of using weapons.
One thing to note, taking XBE doesn't actually let you wield a shield in your off-hand. Because the Hand Crossbow still has the Ammunition property, RAW you still need a free-hand to load it. XBE just removes the Loading property which lets you fire it multiple times in a round. In order to use a Hand XB and a shield you need the Reloading Shot Infusion from Artificer.
I say take fey wanderer and fighting style: druidic warrior. I lean towards taking Shillelagh and Thorn whip but most secondary cantrip options are good. quarter staffs can be used with Pole-arm master if you want and/or shields. Thorn whip is a melee spell with range so it allows you to attack 30ft away without the disadvantage for being in melee (similar to how crossbow expert and hand crossbows will work but less attacks but shield compatible). also thorn whip works with the extra damage of absorb elements.
I have a number of multiclass builds that end up just being 3 levels of rogue on 3 levels of fey wanderer with a racial option that grants at least one (if not two) proficiencies. Do it with a scout and it gets a little crazy for skills. Once you have 3 levels in each you can decide which way you take it. Generally for level progression I would go Rogue, Rogue, Rogue, Ranger, Ranger, Ranger, in general you want rogue first though.
With Rogue and Ranger mixed you will always be doing reasonable damage and have great mobility and stealth. If anything the bigger problem is that you might step on other people's toes with all the skills you know. I recommend leaving all the knowledge ones for everyone else except maybe nature.
