I have a player in a campaign who is thinking of picking up this as a subclass and I'm just trying to confirm (I've done some research and some of it conflicts with each other) how it works to make sure I'm explaining it before they pick up the subclass.
I get the basic concept of how it works and that it obviously doesn't apply to truesight or devil's sight... My question would be does it apply to things that do not have dark vision.
I mean to me it makes sense that if you're hiding in darkness and a creature with dark vision can't see you than a creature without such an ability (in the case of a human for example) would also not to be able to see you because you are in dark vision.
the easiest way to look at it is purely as if it disables the darkvision trait of all creatures who may be trying to perceive the Gloomstalker.
So, if you have some monsters, if they didn't have darkvision, would they be able to see the Gloomstalker anyway?
If the creature trying to perceive the Gloomstalker doesn't have darkvision anyway, then this subclass feature makes no difference - it doesn't make the Gloomstalker harder to spot in the darkness in any way. For that, they want a decent stealth skill and take the time to hide.
Yes. The feature specifically states "If you already have darkvision from your race, its range increases by 30 feet." So if your race has darkvision, which Elf does, it is extended 30 ft.
For creatures that use other types of sight, normal rules apply. That being said rangers still have plenty of hiding Options: Pass without a trace, Fog cloud, HIPS or Natures Veil.
In particular, HIPS Allows active hiding against a surface actively bypassing "being seen" as long as you stay still.(except very specific spells that could be argued as senses) .

question say you are playing a Elf gloom stalker. as an elf you already have dark vision up to 60' would umbral site extend it to 90'?
Yes. The feature specifically states "If you already have darkvision from your race, its range increases by 30 feet." So if your race has darkvision, which Elf does, it is extended 30 ft.
Yes, guys. Gloomstalkers are really amazing and powerful.

No Darkvision = no Umbral Sight. Basically, you are not invisible to any creature that doesn't rely on darkvision to see you in that darkness.
