Starting off, if there is a thread for this I'd appreciate the link. If not, I want some thoughts on how I should do this.
Campaign: Long Term, DM plans on running us through all the premade stories in a specific order upping the CR rating of encounters as we get stronger. The DM said expect to get to level 20 max because we are going through them all.
This is my first ranger and I want to multiclass it. I'm looking into:
Ranger: 8
Rogue: 8
Warlock (Fiend): 4
Helping flesh out this character would be good. Race, when to take what level etc.
Plan was HE using standard array with starting stats being
Str 10, Dex 14, Con 15, Wis 13, Cha 12, before racial mods.
Help is much appreciated.
Ps: Lock MCing is do to backstory. Rogue because of childhood, ranger, was a scout in the military.
Kind of sounds like you want to play a Ranger as your primary if so I would suggest using the "Revised Ranger" rules; although you will want to ask your DM for permission as the rules are Unearthed Arcana material.
For level breaks check out the "Player's Handbook" class progression tables of the classes you want to use, to see what features sound fun and at which level you would get them. Doing so will help you figure out the level breaking points for your character. Taking the Rogue class to level seven would be a decent example of a commonly used level break. One point of advice for multiclassing is some features from one class will make another feature from different class redundant or perhaps useless, an example of this can be seen in the Rogue's Cunning action and the Ranger's Fleet of Foot with Cunning Action being the dominant of the two features. This sort of interaction between class features can also help you decide which level to break off at.
For your race the Half Elf would be a good choice thanks to the boost to Charisma which would allow the multiclass into Warlock, or perhaps the Human Variant if you want a feat as well which are handy. Any race you choose would need to have that boost to Charisma though if you want to multiclass into Warlock by rules as written.
The "revised ranger" is a ton of fun! I have been playing one in my game and it's great, so many little things such as party travel not having to deal with difficult terrain, taking one minute to see if your favored enemy is within five miles of you (I use this all the time it's VERY beneficial). With that, you learn numbers distance direction and type, at higher levels you get two favored enemies. There is so much more talk to your DM about I would highly recommend it. :)

Breeze, the Air Genasi Rogue in G.M.O.A.T.S sunless citadel Guldrum, the Dwarf Barbarian in Ye ol' Yarn Spun Legend Baku, the Tortle Bloodhunter in Coliseum of Conquest
Ranger/Rogue is always viable, splitting in a third class makes things complicated. What about Warlock are you wanting to do? There may be better ways to do it.
I would recommend starting as a Rogue, you get 4 skills vs 3, proficiency in Thieves Cant’ and Thieves Tools, you get another skill when you multiclass into Ranger + you start with Sneak Attack.
I have a character that I am playing for published adventures, took the first level as rogue, will be taking the next 5 as Ranger (revised) Gloom Stalker, then will be taking Rogue (assassin) to 12 dropping in 6th level Ranger for greater favored enemy when it is viable to do so. Ultimately will be 12 Rogue/8 Ranger.
