I have just created a new Duergar Ranger for a new campaign. His main Stata are 16 dex, 14 con, and 16 wis. He is obviously a ranged build using a Heavy crossbow which I intend to take the Feats Crossbow Expert and Sharpshooter. I plan on taking the Gloom Stalker Sub-Class. After 5th level I intend to multiclass into Fighter and after 9th multiclass into Rogue. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions for this build?
I rarely go with 3 classes as class resources tend to burn out quickly. (Or for rogue loose out on dice) I like deeper skills as it tends to change the play experience..
Now, depending on what you take, you may be limited by the heavy crossbow. There is a heavy crossbow thread awhile back that may be helpful. But in the end it usually comes down to narrative/character choices.
The Fighter gives me several things, it gives me Second Wind, Action Surge, Superior Technique ( 1d6 Action Die Menacing Attack ), and Battle Master ( 4d8 Action Die Ambush and Precision Attack ). Rogue gives me Sneak Attack 2d6, Cunning Action and Assassin ( Assassinate ) So on the first round of combat the character would be doing. 6d6 ( Hunters Mark ) 6d10 + 108 Crossbow 2d6 ( Sneak Attack ) 2d8 Dread Ambusher. Thats if there are no surprised combatants.
Yes but you would have more sneak die with just ranger and rogue and a reaction that could save more hp than second wind (depending on circumstances)
Or by not going deeper into ranger you loose out on higher ranger spells and features Some things can only be solved via utility and not damage. (Although conjure animals does both)
Your build is fine but there are trade offs. I only wanted to point that out. What I prefer may not suit you.
The actual build will end up being Ranger 12/Fighter 4/Rogue 4. It makes the most sense to go 4 in Fighter and Rogue to get Feats/Ability Score Improvements.
Gloomstalker is by far the most powerful Ranger sub-class. However, a classic Hunter Duergar can grant you advantage on saving throws against Poison, Paralysis, Illusions, Charm and Frighten (once you get Steel Will at level 7). Both Horde Breaker and Colossus Slayer are also great attacking features. You can be a very efficient swarm killer by leveraging CBE, Horde Breaker and occasionally Hail of Thorns.
