My friends and I are doing a homebrew and just using DNDBeyond character sheets for keeping track of these. The PHB has Ensnaring Strike as a 1st level spell, so my ranger should be able to learn it, but I am unable to add it to my spell list on DNDBeyond. Reading other questions regarding this has led me to it "not being in SRD". As a newer player I don't know what this means and have not found a way to get it to show up in the spell list to add to my character. Wondering if I just have to track it elsewhere or if there is a way to get added?
SRD = System Reference Document. It's one of the documents Wizards published under an open license (aka free to use). Those and several other documents, like the Basic Rules, are all collected on this site under the heading "Basic Rules" and are all free to use without purchase. The PHB is not. So if you want to add Ensnaring Strike to your character sheet, you have two options: make it using the homebrew tools (you can pick a free spell that you do have access to use as a template) if you already have access to the actual text of the spell elsewhere (say, you have the printed version of the PHB). If you don't, then you can buy just the spell for $2.99 (go to the page for the PHB in the marketplace -- don't use the app for this -- and scroll down inside it until you find the section for spells), which will count against the cost of purchasing the rest of the PHB on this site if you ever decide to do so.
Simply "srd" is the free content where ensnaring strike is phb content.
His first two options are correct however there's a third and fourth use other templates for building characters. Before dndbeyond I used alot of spreadsheet and word templates for character tracking. Many of the vtt options also have characters builders.
Finally, there's dm campaign sharing if a subscriber dm shares content their players can use it. One purchase for a whole group.( Note: Do not go asking for sharing however because it's considered rude.)
Thanks for the help! I just made what is essentially a clone of the spell via homebrew tools. (I have the physical version and did not want to buy it digitally) Everything worked out! Thanks for the tip again!
