The title of this thread sums up my question. I have a goblin ranger with the Beast Master subclass (2014 rules by the way.) If her beast companion were to be something weird but still Medium sized and a beast, could she ride around on the creature like a mount? If so, does she need a saddle?
Specifically, either a Giant Frog or a Giant Badger.
The rules on mounted combat in the Player's Handbook (see here) say that you can ride a creature as a mount if it's at least one size category larger than you, is willing to accept you as a rider, and "has appropriate anatomy". In your example, you've got the first two parts of that covered, and as long as it takes the form of something you can physically ride on you've got the third as well.
As for needing a saddle, there are no specific rules about that in 5e D&D.
1. Having the beast dodge works ok to help protect it.
2. getting sanctuary can really help keep it from being attacked. Cleric initiate Feat at 4 or a cleric friend or mc.
3. Get a fasteth (doge as ba) from ebboron or other creature trait to provide defence (blindsight+ fogcoud, flyby etc)
4. Magic items can work with companions. Periapt of wound closure, +1 defence items , hellhound cloak (take care but being a companion helps)
5. 2014 only.. If it dies you are subject to the same death/resurrection rules. Death saves and stabilization. If it still dies get someone to cast Gentle repose. Ask dm about the death loophole.
As to keeping your mount alive, it's actually easier to keep a Primal Companion alive as a mount, as long as you get Mounted Combatant. Your mount can't get attack, gets free evasion, and you can whomp small or smaller creatures while you're riding it (medium too, if you've got a way to cast Enlarge/Reduce on it).

Short answer is yes. Attunement rules apply to all creatures. (now you could argue 24 should've limited it to 3 per pc +extras but that's a different discussion.)
Long answer is yes but the rules state a dm determines if a creature cannot use an item due to its ability. All creatures follow the same rules unless it's taken away. Sometimes the class features or spell rules takes things away (like the attack actions) or places restrictions.
Nothing in the game takes it away and if the dm is monitoring magic items distribution anyway there's no reason to worry. If a player can get something they decide how to use it.
4. is absolutely valid the low blow would have been to go for 5 as bad but really at least one option will work if you plan around keeping a companion.
If all else fails
6. Have it die and make it your story. Get a new one per rules and embrace the story it tells.

Thanks for the help! I guess I should've just looked at that section to begin with
No problem!

The main problem will be keeping your mount alive. Barding gets pretty expensive.
If it's a movement aid and not an attacker:

Can Primal Companions attune magic items? Certainly barding is an option, but I don't think they can attune a Periapt of Wound Closure or a Cloak of Protection.
