My question is in regards to ranger spells known at level 1. The spellcasting description states...
Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher
You know two 1st-level spells of your choice from the ranger spell list.
However the Ranger Table says I don't know anything at level 1, which do I follow?
Spell slot level and character level are different things.
As a Ranger, you will know 0 spells at your 1st Ranger level. As a "half-caster" you gain your spells at a later level.
When you first gain access to spells at level 2, you will gain access to 1st level spells. At 5th Ranger level, you would gain access to 2nd level spells.
Think of the 9 levels of spells as concentric circles, and as your power level increases, your 'radius' of control over magic does. As a Ranger, you will expand that circle to the 5th layer-- 5th level spells-- at level 17. A "Full caster", such as a Druid, would gain their highest level of spells at the same "tier", gaining access to their 9th level spells at Druid level 17.
Ok, I always thought of it as 1st level spells are known at level 1. But that's not the case is what you're saying. 1st level spells are like 1st Spell Casting Level. Spell Casting Level and Actual Character Level are two different things, I didn't know that. Thank you!
It's basically tradition at this point, but D&D uses the word 'level' for too many things. Class level, character level, spell level, dungeon level ...

Correct! You're welcome. :) Enjoy your Ranger-- that's my favourite class!
