Hi All, just started a new campaign set in a homebrew Waterdeep setting. After session 0 we decided that the party will be a group of private investigators, but each member has a speciality I.e. medic that can investigate cause of death, magic knowledge, information gatherer (face) and physical crime scene investigator. I picked the physical crime scene investigator and thought an urban ranger would be fun to fill out that role. I also wanted to play a high WIS/perception class. We are starting at level 3 and I'm torn between 2 subclasses. I'd love to get some extra input and ideas for my character. So far we have a Cleric, Wizard and Bard fulfilling the other roles.
The first subclass I thought of was beastmaster. I thought it would be thematic having a pet (eg mastif) to help with investigations, track down culprits etc. My DM is happy with me using the UA rules for the revised ranger and beastmaster. The second is gloomstalker. In an urban setting this reminds me of Batman. Which I thought would also be fun, adds an extra stealth element which I like.
I'm thinking of rolling a V. Human and taking the observant feat to help with the whole CSI theme. Stats are 10 16 12 12 16 8. We are using point buy so I can still change them up. I'm also thinking about multiclassing rogue down the line. Or is it worth going straight Ranger? What do you guys think?
Gloomstalker ranger + inquisitor rogue + shadows monk = Batman. Gloomstalker gives ambush abilities, inquisitor for the investigator skills, and way of shadows gives the shadow step and cloak of shadows abilities which scream Batman. I would go with the gloom stalker personally. Not that I'd recommend choosing on this basis, but I believe it's pretty well known that the beastmaster is underpowered.
