Hi...new to playing D&D and I really enjoy the idea of a ranger. I've been doing some reading and wanted your opinions...constructive criticisms...on my idea.
What I'm thinking is a variant human ranger with the Polearm Master Feat at 1st level. At 2nd level, take Duel Weapon Fighting. At 3rd level, take archetype of Hunter/Colossus Slayer. And at 4th level, take the feat of Sentinel.
What I would like to use as a weapon is a double bladed glaive that either magically or mechanically separates in the middle to make two swords...
Would this be a viable ranger build? Should it be strength based over dexterity based?
You would have to talk to your DM about the double bladed glaive and about it seperating to be two swords. I don't know why you would want to two weapon fight if you are investing so much into using a polearm weapon.
Hey Shaylic...thanks for the response. It was more just a thematic type of thing...seemed like it would be fun. But if that were not allowable by the DM...what would you use as your fighting style? If I'm using the polearm...then the only thing that really helps is the Defense style since I would already be attacking at a distance with the glaive.
Polearm would be Str. Fighting style I would pick defense.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Depends, as remember you could still have a longbow, so if you focus str then shoring up dex would help when needs be. Ask DM if you could take Great weapon fighting, or if you could wield a glaive like a spear, so d8 for one hand, d10 for 2 hands. Then you could take duelling style. You'd take a feat at 4th lvl, but what are stats, cause if using standard, you should buff up attributes, or you could roll poorly, so have to get better.
