My group started out a couple of years ago as new players, and recently finished Curse of Strahd. Our DM said we can redesign our characters before we start a new campaign, since we were all newcomers to the game and have learned a lot since then. I had been playing a Beast Master. It was very disappointing because I felt my companion was very ineffective. I got a Sunsword in the campaign, and I enjoyed the melee play.
I'm a level 8 Wood Elf, and I am looking start over as a Horizon Walker. Do you have specific spells/feats/tips on redesigning this character? Should I do range or melee? Should I multi-class as a Rogue? I like the idea of teleporting around the area shooting a crossbow or sword-fighting.
I work a lot (even now), so all tips would be greatly appreciated, since it's a bit overwhelming looking at all the material. THANKS!!
I'd first ask if you could use the unearthed arcana Ranger. It's a buffed playtest version of the Ranger over on the offical Wizards of the coast website. They also got a buffed version of the beastmaster. Standard beastmaster could have been so much better...tbh even the buffed beastmaster ain't great.
I posted some recommendations in another topic here in the Ranger forum. Its maybe 4 or 5 topics down "Melee focused horizon walker" or something like that. Take a look if interested.
I'm going to check with my DM - I saw the updated Feats for Ranger, and they look good. I agree with you that the buffed Beast Master still isn't good.
