I had an idea not too long ago about having a dragonborn ranger that can beat things to death with his pet a hyena. I think you get the idea already.
I want to play a beast master ranger and a monk, i really love the idea and not going full optimization. but i don't want to be very weak that i am dragging down the party nor broken op (or do i? hmmm... :3) but yea. Anyone got tips? levels most likely a long run and i might use him for two campaigns underdark and another fantasy one. level cap all the way till twenty. A break down would be nice but i'd be glad to even get like 3 monk (which monk sticking out with the books) 17 ranger.

Born under the watch of something from the furthest corners of the far realms.... It knows all.... it sees all... and it asks: "What is it that you want to see?"... and my answer is... ALL"
Ranger 17 Kensei 3 is very potent, Scout Rogue is also very strong. You get a lot of strong options without being too MAD. With Kensei you should Make Use of your only attack and getting a d10 finesse weapon is nice, I think I would go 6 in Kensei personally for One with the blade and Extra Attack - I assume you are using revised ranger. You should go at least 5 in kensei to consider yourself optimised, The extra attack can be used by your companion or yourself and at lvl 11 your beast can use it's action to attack loads of targets and it's reaction attack again if you attack, allowing you to put out some serious amount of attacks
It's fine mate, I realized how bad of an idea it was, both beast master and mon are reliant on leveling up for damage and any delay would result in worse performance. The concept was nice at first but mechanic wise... unless I get a DM willing to homebrew me a hyena that scales... it won't work but I appreciate your advice. :)

You're better off using a feat for ritual caster and getting find familiar and picking a better archetype. Beastmasters, unless you make very specific companion choices...stink.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

Oh, sorry, I did not realise this was from 2017
Try wizard 4 ranger 16-maybe war magic from XGE for wizard subclass.

Well, You could go a few levels just for the companion which levels as you grow in total character levels, 5/7 levels and your mostly set

Revised Ranger Beast Master is actually pretty descent tbh
Beast Master Ranger 5+ with Moon Druid 2+ would be fun!
One to three levels in fighter is always good for a ranger.
One or more levels in rogue are great for a ranger.
One level in cleric is also good for a ranger. Healing spells and spell slots (and more attacks if you take war cleric).
A frontline, strength based, sword and shield ranger mixes well with one to three levels in barbarian.
