hey guys, in a few days we are going to start our campaign in a few days and i picked Archer .. i like to RP a lot, my DM who knows that told me that Archer has a great flavor in this Campaign, i started creating my Character. I will use Tasha's HnB,. To be frank i love numbers as well.. so. PPL who already played Rime, without spoiling, which archetype do you think it fits better..
My first two picks were BM and DragonWarden they both have a pet and do decent dmg. I think Gloom might be great both damage and flavor since in Rime is always darkness ..
Its a tough call since you want to focus on damage numbers and theme. Pets are better for tactical reasons (most of the time) not damage. (unless you have poison harvesting PHB Pets). I have not played Dragonwarden (drakewarden) but the pattern seems similar. A gloom stalker with Tasha's still can get a pet summon spell so that's probably the better way to go.
For archetype, I'd choose Gloom Stalker. There are only 4 hours of sunlight a day, and even when you have sunlight it's dim light. That darkness makes darkvision an invaluable feature. And if you can combine it with a different race that grants cold resistance, like silver/white dragonborn or goliath, you're in a really good place.
I wouldn't even use the alternate features in Tasha's. Favored Enemy can be used for creatures like humanoids (dwarves/duergar and goblins are two good picks) and some Monstrosities (owlbears, winter wolves, yetis) even have languages you can pick up. And Natural Explorer (Arctic) is too easy a pick to not have.
i mentioned Tasha's strictly for the improved BM and Drake Warden. 90% i will go Gloom who fits perfectly.. I will go vHuman with Sharpshooter, and your for favorite i picked (that i can change) humans, orc, elfs but they will change.
Well, Drake Warden is still UA and will likely be tuned down whenever it sees publication. Given the usual publication cycle, that could be 10 months from now. I also don't think a dragon is what you want.
But if we're talking Beast Master...
The primal companions in TCoE are marginally stronger. If you compare a wolf to the Beast of the Land, they both effectively have a CR of 1. The same creatures have a CR of 5 and 6, respectively, at 20th-level without barding; which only increases their CR by 1. And for Rime of the Frostmaiden, which takes the characters from 1 to about 12, they'll both tie at CR 4. The wolf hits slightly harder and every bite has a chance to trip, but the Beast of the Land has more hit points. And all of this assumes that a wolf is even an option. A quick skim of Xanathar's Guide to Everything doesn't show any in arctic environments. Your DM can always rule otherwise, but the only viable Ranger's Companion would seem to be a blood hawk. Huh, maybe I should have used that and Beast of the Sky instead.
The big advantages of the optional rules from Tasha's are the ease of revival/summoning a different companion, the bonus to saving throws, and the bonus action attack. And all of those are solid advantages. You can also decide how your primal companion appears. The statistics don't change, but it could be a Medium bear or saber-toothed tiger, or even a Small snowy owl. That's a cool factor that the PHB Beast Master just can't compete with.
Even if you don't take Tasha's subclasses, You may want to use some of it if you can. The adjusted spell list is nice. Many people would also prefer the primal awareness vs primeval awareness switch up.
