I came up with a new background called, The Tortured, Toxic Soul. The character I wanted to make for this background is a "Drug Addict" Poison Addict Soul Knife. He injects himself with Poison to ease his Psychic Torment. The Poison in his Body permeates his soul and his Soul Blades are permeated with this poisonous energy for a turn. The self injection requires a bonus action and lasts a turn, not the next attack, but the whole turn, as it isn't a coating of your weapon, it's coating your soul for a turn. You can even enforce an extra turn of waiting for the poison to set in and permeate the soul and make the poisonous effects only apply on the turn after the turn of the self injection, if you see fit to nerf the idea. I'd also make the character immune to the poisoned condition and resistant to poison damage as a part of their Drug Addict Background, they have built a resistance.
The Background is named Tortured, Toxic Soul. The Background achieves the purpose of being a poison addict that has a tortured soul and the soul becomes toxic or poisonous. You could even implement self damage of a 1d4 on injection or a flat 1 or 2 damage on injection if you needed to further nerf the idea.
The backstory for the race for the particular character that I created this background for is that of a Quori Possessed Tiefling, hence the psychic torment to mask with an addiction.
Tragic Backstory:
Asmodeus through scheming and dealings, deceived and procured a fleeing Quori Spirit to "Save it" but presented it to his daughter Glasya to experiment with. Yes, Asmodeus is capable of interdimensional shenanigans. Glasya through selective breeding created Quori Possessed Tiefling offspring of the Enslaved Quori Spirit. The Quori origin and Tiefling breeding experiments are the source of the Psychic Torment.
So the character gets both Glasya Tiefling and Kalashtar benefits. Divide them up as you see fit during character creation. Eventually take the Poisoner feat to make your character more effective. If the DM is allowing a lv1 general feats, I'd recommend this one.
For further Homebrewing of the Soul Knife subclass:
I also homebrewed Weapon Mastery into the Soul Blades, if his Off-hand represents a Soul Dagger, While the Main-hand represents a Soul Shortsword, then if he has Weapon Mastery for both Dagger and Shortsword, from Rogue, then his offhand soul blade manifests Nick rather than Vex. If Weapon Mastery is truly a part of your rogue, it should make sense as a mental process of mastery that the weapons you mastered mentally and physically should manifest through your soul blades.
Bonus action to self inject poison, Attack Action with Nick and Vex together, swing both Soul Blades together and get two procs of Poison Damage, end turn.
