hi there, i'm playing a lv9 soulknive in a strict 5.5 2024 DnD game (only have access to player's guide and heroes of faerun).
my DM doesn't allow sneak attack on a reaction (wasn't aware of that until the beginning of the campaign)
i thought about multiclassing into Fighter next lvl, is it better to aim battlemaster (despite the unability to sneak on a reaction) or just go champion for the improved critical ?
Multiclassing is rarely a good idea unless you have something very specific you're trying to get out of it.
Improved Critical is good, but it will take three levels of Fighter to get there, during which time you're missing out on more Sneak Attack damage dice, Improved Cunning Strike, and a feat. And as you point out, since your DM isn't running Sneak Attack properly, it may be a bit less impactful than it should be. I'm not sure that's worth it, and I don't think there's much in Battle Master that would worth it either.
The increased critical range from taking 3 levels of Champion Fighter will actually increase your average damage less than simply scaling your Sneak Attack dice by staying Rogue. The more common criticals will feel good, but the extra damage dice will do more for your damage per turn on the aggregate.
Also, don't forget that a Rogue gets ASI/Feats at levels 10 and 12, so if you go Rogue 9/Fighter 3 you will be giving up 2 feats, which will scale your ability scores as well as giving you extra features that will be nice to have. Rogues have a ton of good feat choices. Mage Slayer, Defensive Duelist, Skulker, Fairy Trickster, Speedy....there is no shortage of options that can make your character a more complete package.
yes i don't think Champion will be better than just straight Rogue, my hesitation is more about Battlemaster.
Superiority Dice can compensate missing sneak attack dice, and create some good synergies with the Rogue arsenal.
I already have Mage Slayer, Fairy trickster is not a priority because i already have Soulknife teleportation, the next Feat i'm looking at is Sentinel, i'm mainly a Spellcaster rusher and to make a blaster or support spellcaster TP out instead of acting in combat create a great advantage, and of course i can can TP in as a bonus action the following round.

I think you might have been confusing Fairy Trickster with Fey Touched. The Fey Touched feat gives you Misty Step and a level 1 Enchantment or Divination spell. Fairy Trickster lets you give the target of an attack Disadvantage on saving throws until the end of your next turn on a failed Wisdom save. It can be a powerful combination with Cunning Strikes. You attack, apply Fairy Trickster's Flustering Strike, then the target has to make it's save against your Cunning Strike with Disadvantage. It works particularly well once you hit Rogue 14 and gain access to the Knockout option which knocks the target Unconscious on a failed Constitution save.
thank you for that clarification, yeah it seems to be a very interesting feat, too bad i've already reach 20 in DEX and my CHA is one of my dumb stat.....(my starting party had a Bard and a Warlock so i don't have to be the face of the group)
