I am pretty new to playing D&D. I've played a few times about 15 years ago and just recently gotten back in. I have done a few one shots and we are about to play Curse of Strahd campaign. I have chosen the Haunted One background. My character is a variant (Eladrin) Elf Rogue and i plan on pursuing the Assassin Archetype.
What I have so far is i would like to go in the direction of Blade/Underworld (Selene) without becoming a vampire. Basically at some point __ years ago a vampire (DM will describe to me) murdered my family and I have spent the last __ years training trying to find Him/Her or group.
I'm having trouble putting everything together......
In all honesty, since you have the basics down, I would try seeing how the events of your backstory play into your character's personality and actions? Perhaps ask your if your DM will do a session 0, that way you get a grasp of how you're gonna play them. Also, I personally like to use songs to get ideas for backstory and personality stuff. Maybe listen to something and see if you get any inspiration to build upon the backstory you already have. Also your DM might allow you to add things into your backstory later down the road? At least that's what my DM does. Over all, I suggest talking over things with your DM more. Hopefully this helps!
I think where this character becomes interesting is the haunted one. What is it that your running away from? It sounds like there is a vengeance story in there but deciding on details can really make a character. Did play a willing role in the massacre that killed your family? Where are you when it happened? Do you have a survivor's syndrome kind of thing going on? Perhaps you wanted to become a vampire and had was manipulated into the event that caused the family massacre. Now instead of trying to become a vampire, you want to hunt them. You want to hide what you did but also avenge your family.
Another interesting part of the story is how did you become an assassin? Why? There are a lot of reasonable ways to kill vampires. Why did you decide the way of deceit and shadows?
As Infected Genetics mentioned, you can always add to your back story. Perhaps as the game progresses you will be able to flesh out the story a little more in a way that fits the world.
