I’m pondering a character for an upcoming campaign. A high Elf Rouge, and I am wondering how good going 2 levels of Bard for Jack of all Trades, and 2 levels of Trickster Cleric for that create duplicate illusion. All other levels and main class would be Rouge
Thoughts on whether that is a good combo or if that is too all over the place?
it does require a 13 in Dex, Wis, and Cha. Any spells cast from bard would be CHA based, WIS from cleric spells, and if you choose arcane trickster would be INT spells. It's a lot to keep track of. Which is fine if the spells from cleric and bard don't have saving throws or attack rolls.
Just remember that Invoke Duplicity is considered a concentration spell.
You make a good point Halfling2099, so I should clarify spells were a secondary consideration to class features in this question. Though by not considering the spells I’m ignoring half the power of these classes.
I saw someone run something like this, but it was a variant human scout rogue/shadow monk/trickery cleric with the charlatan feature and skulker feat. It felt very Naruto-inspired, and the party almost never failed stealth checks.
Between your own (possibly expertised) stealth, bardic inspiration and blessing of the trickster, you'll likely make your party similarly stealthy, but the sheer MADness is going to hold back your inspiration dice. Bard would need at least 5 levels to mitigate this issue, but that's a huge investment.
High elf means a wizard cantrip. I'd recommend prestidigitation/minor illusion for utility or green flame blade/booming blade for combat; investing in intelligence only adds to the MADness.
Ultimately, it's your character; if you're more interested in roleplaying than crunching numbers, feel free to make a paladin/ranger/wizard. Focus more on WHO the character is rather than WHAT the character can do. Anyone who's played a champion fighter knows that even having a -1 to an ability check means you can still try it. Personally, I find flawed characters more interesting than optimized ones.
