I'm trying to create a character for a friend of mine's campaign, with the idea being that you play a twisted version of a fairy tale character, and I chose Robin Hood. My idea is that instead of being a hero, he's someone who just sought to bring himself power, and if power meant getting the peasants on his side, he'd do it. I'm torn between Assassin, and Thief, both would work but I feel like I enjoy Assassin more?

I am part of the Cult of Grammar. Respect us. Or we will find the slightest mistake in your grammar, and never let you forget it. Clones would have saved Star Wars, and Kylo Ren sucks. MAKE THE EMPIRE GREAT AGAIN!!! I am a stormtrooper, and the Skywalker family is made of nothing but idiots who are insane. Cough Anakin and Luke Skywalker Cough
You've identified a character concept and have identified that you feel like you would enjoy one archetype over the other. Are you wanting us to talk you off of assassin? I mean, thief is the better of the two subclasses outside of the whiteroom due to how surprise functions and the likelihood of your entire party being proficient at stealth let alone successful at beating the enemy passive perception being low, but if you feel like you want to play an assassin, play an assassin.

If I may add the suggestion try oathbreaker or oath of conquest paladin. Robin Hood in the story was a former crusader who turned to banditry. As the good guy version of the story he turned to banditry as protest of a corrupt government. So, the bad guy version would be the rebellion against a just government.
Thank you for your suggestions/comments, they're good options that I'll take into consideration.

I'd go vengeance paladin / rogue. Get enough levels for smites. Rogue I'd go with Swashbuckler. CHA would be important for a highwayman, either to persuade or intimidate. CHA is useful for both classes. As swash you can sneak on basically every turn if played right. When you crit, throw a smite on top for improved damage. Get utility out of Guidance.
There are over a dozen versions of the classic Robin Hood story.
For one Marion was not even included in the oldest stories. She was added in the 1600's and didn't even take an active role until the 1800;s.
Robin started as JUST a highwayman robbing the rich. The poor have nothing to rob by the way. The story evolved him into leading a group of outlaws and eventually into a nobleman.
Nothing is ever said about what Robin did after he acquired his land title and home. He could very well have become just like every other lord of the land. In fact if he didn't impose enough taxes on his people the king would have the right to take everything away from him.
Nothing in the stories claims he is anything other than a bowman and sword swinger. I would say he is closer to a classic ranger since he used the woods to his advantage very well. He could be almost any class in D&D now.

This is an excellent point, thank you so much for bringing this up, I guess in DnD anyone can be anything but almost literally this time.

What's the actual question here?
