So, I will be playing a new Rogue character soon and I decided to put a subtle spin on the class. As a juvenile delinquent, he got in with the wrong crowd, did burglaries, break-ins, safe cracks, etc. He got popped by City Guards and while in jail somehow managed to do the warden a solid. Obviously, I don't have it all sorted out, but I'm partial to the idea of my Rogue actually not being the stereotypical thieving rogue and actually be a pro-people version. Instead of stealing stuff, he starts his own "locksmith" business and helps nobility and everyday folk secure their homes and valuables by offering safes, tips, seminars, whatever. lol.
For lack of a better term, I dubbed it an "anti-rogue". Anyway, I'm looking at Thief and Arcane Trickster for pathway ideas, but admit I know zip about this class. Looking for advice or ideas on how to make this character tick.
Sounds cool, but also a concept that is rather detatched from mechanical choices. You could have that background with any number of classes/subclasses as long as you are proficient in thieves tools and perception.
Apart from a straight up rogue you might take a look at the Artificer if you want a "magic mechanic" feeling. Those classes mesh decently together too.
For rogue subclass I agree Thief and Arcane trickster could work, but also take a look at Inquisitive rogue from Xanathar's.
along your same idea. I had a character that was a cleric rogue who's job it was to clear the crypts of necromancers, bandits, monsters, and traps. So not evil (criminal/bandit-y) and worked with all the local churches to keep the tombs de-trapped. Because nothing is ruins a funeral more then planning another funeral.
Mastermind or inquisitive archetype from xanathars guide to everything. They focus on being smart and finding stuff out. Sounds like a perfect fit. Maybe proficiency with tinkers tools and thieves tools to help with the locksmith type person

Just because you are a rogue doesn't mean that you have to be a criminal or anti-people. This character could just as easily be an artificer with the criminal background. The question you should ask yourself is if this character needs to be a rogue for the concept to work. If yes, go rogue, if no, do something else. :)
