This means make the most of your cunning action. Only monks get better mobility than rogues, and the hide bonus action can be lifesaving for you and gives you advantage on your next attack roll if successful. You can move into combat, attack with your sneak attack and then disengage to a safe distance.
Tip 2: Pick skills that fill a definite need in the party because you get a lot of them.
Are you a party face? Then select persuasion and either deception or intimidation, double proficiency in one of them. You'll be as capable as a bard as a party face, bribe officials and talk your way out of trouble when you get caught.
Are you the trap finder? (Rogues do this arguably better than anyone) Select proficiency in investigation, arcana and perception. Double proficiency at least one of investigation or perception and you'll be able to disarm traps, sidestep wards and avoid ambushes.
Are you the tracker? Scout is a good subclass rogue for this, or if you multiclass into ranger. Pick perception, nature and survival as skills. This allows you to find the enemies before they find you.
Are you the sneak thief? If you're a thief rogue then double proficiency in sleight of hand is an absolute must, and acrobatics or athletics is also a useful proficiency. Steal the enemy's weapons right out of their scabbards in the middle of a fight! Pick every lock, and steal all the gold!
Tip 3: ALWAYS select proficiency in stealth. Preferably one of your double proficiency is stealth. A rogue that isn't sneaky isn't really a rogue in my opinion. Because the class only gets one attack unless they multiclass it's important to find a way to generate advantage on your attack rolls and stealth helps you do this.
