My Tabaxi got turned into a gibbering demon and destroyed by the party. Divine intervention is required to bring them back from the beyond, in the form of a divine Reincarnation spell. I rolled on the extended races table and got..... tortle.
I had to do some ret-conning because losing stealth and perception (tabaxi racials) was a no-go, so I had to swap other proficiencies out.
But... now I have a slightly less dexterous (18 instead of 20 thanks to Tabaxi Racial being lost) Tortle 11 Scout/Rogue 3 Fey Wanderer/Ranger with expertise in Acrobatics, Stealth, Perception, and Thief's Tools. :D It's kinda weird having no AC effect on a high dex character! It makes me wonder if it's even worth putting my next ASI into dex. (It is for the attack bonus, obvs. :D So I will!) And I took the mobile feat because my whole character concept was a ridiculously fast Kitty dashing in and slashing people and getting back out... so I have a 50 base move as a tortle now. :D
I'm thinking the hide in shell might be used to imitate rocks for stealthing around in places... but I'm trying to come up with other fun tortle rogue things.
So... anybody play tortle rogues? Any flavor or options that might be fun to work in, RP wise or mechanics wise you'd like to recommend?
Lo, and I was the ONLY PERSON PLAYING A TORTLE ROGUE!
I have decided that I must use my acrobatics in a Tortley way at least once a game session. Also, I want to know if I can shell up and have the barbarian bowl me into enemies, Super Mario style! I may need a lot of turtle wax for the bottom of my shell. Or find a magic item with 'grease' on command!
You could pump charisma or pick up deception. Nobody would expect a tortle to be a rogue! Challenge someone to a race, only to leave them in the dust; bonus points if gold bets are involved!
Tortle is a great race to experiment strength builds on dex classes due to not caring about armor, though it looks like you're quite invested in dexterity already.
While it would be very situational, Tortles would be great at underwater espionage. Sneaking around water ways, lakes and rivers. Also, if you have a spell casters in the group that can cast illusion magic, you can turtle up and pretend to be a crate or some other container in different circumstances like trying to get past a guard station undetected by hopping in a merchants cart or pretending to be furniture in a room or a rock outside where you know a meeting with important people is being held. Also, as Rexir2 mentioned, you can use the perceptions that others might have on your more stocky and clunky appearance to your advantage. Make people regret judging a book by it's cover.
Like I said, these are more situational but could be fun ideas.
Edit: Also, I had a situation where my Tortle Artificer was punted by the party monk while turtled up after the floor was covered in ice. I was a giant hockey puck.

Yah, my STR was my dump stat. I had 20 dex with Tabaxi racial, so 18 dex, and all my paired scimitars are my primary magic item, so I will use my next ASI to get back to 20 for hits and damage bonus. 17 charisma and a persuasion proficiency should make this funny. I fight with paired swords, or paired daggers. We are working on a spear-based magic item (DM said it would be a finess spear) quest that will be bound to me, so all I need is nun-chucks to make my TMNT roleplay complete.
Rough : Good idea on the concealment! We do get up to shenanigans like that. :D
I forgot to mention. One of the other characters in the party worships turtles. Our barbarian with a 7 int. This is gonna be fun! The big reveal is tonight!
This was the first hit from Google when I searched for tortle rogue...!
And the first thing I thought while starting to read thru the thread was, "well, you got four weapons to choose from, plus throwing stars for ranged...

First...you have decades of freaking Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to draw from.
Second...see First.
IMHO, Earthdawn is still the best fantasy realm, Shadowrun is the best Sci-Fi realm, and Dark Sun is the best D&D realm.
No advice, I just love that you are embracing this.
Someone beat me to the Ninja Turtles, they are going to provide inspiration galore. Cowabunga dude!

To anyone who comes across this in the future I have 4 words when it comes to Tortle Rogue: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
