the title says it all, I'm quite new at D&D and am aspiring to become the DM, however I'm running into the issue that I keep finding attacks from monsters of 1/4 difficulty that do 8(2d6+1) damage, it surely cant mean 16d6+8 bc that's a lot of damage for such a low level monster. it would make sense if it did 2d6+1 damage, but what does the 8 mean then?
Like I said, I'm probably being stupid and skipped over something in the books.
The 8 in 8(2d6+1) damage is the average result of that damage calculation (3+4+1=8); they're put there in part to help DM's compare damage output to party HP, and partly as a time saving option- rather than roll damage, you just use that average on each hit.
