So the rune knights third level feature Rune Carver states:
You can use magic runes to enhance your gear. You learn two runes of your choice, from among the runes described below, and each time you gain a level in this class, you can replace one rune you know with a different one from this feature. When you reach certain levels in this class, you learn additional runes, as shown in the Runes Known table.
Whenever you finish a long rest, you can touch a number of objects equal to the number of runes you know, and you inscribe a different rune onto each of the objects. To be eligible, an object must be a weapon, a suit of armor, a shield, a piece of jewelry, or something else you can wear or hold in a hand. Your rune remains on an object until you finish a long rest, and an object can bear only one of your runes at a time.
Now as far as I can see there is nothing to prevent you from giving your rune inscribed gear to another party member. Am I missing something or is the rune knight fighter somewhat of an artificer?
The reason I'm asking is because I want to play an unarmed grappler, aside from my armor and an amulet I don't have any gear to use in combination with my runes. I'd probably use a frost and hill rune on myself, mainly because the active on fire rune requires a weapon. So can I give my wizard a storm rune and my rogue a cloud rune from 10th level and up?
None of the text for Rune Knight says that runes only work when on an object you personally are using, so **yes**, they work if an ally is using the object.
Bear in mind, this also means if an enemy gets hold of one, they can use it.
Only the passive abilities would transfer with the object. So yes, those would work if given to other players. The invoking of the runes would not though. As that feature is meant only for the Rune Knight during their turn. And the Rune Knight would have to be wearing/wielding the object in order to invoke them.
In regards to the Fire Rune with your build. The rune does not have to be inscribed into a weapon in order to work. And because of that. I see no issue with this being used in conjunction with Unarmed Fighting. Even though your body isn't technically a weapon. It fits in with the spirit of what this rune does and your build. Ask your DM. They may allow it.
“To be eligible ........ or something else YOU can wear or hold in hand” .... so by the wording it looks and sounds like it is only on something YOU are wearing or holding
The range of equipment which can hold a rune is very wide. It's anything you can wear or hold. Go buy some dirt cheap brass rings, or inscribe a rune on your sock. Not carrying a weapon is not an issue for number of runes.

All the wording for rune knight suggests it is only for your own use.
