Nope. It's not a spell slot, just a free casting of a spell once per long rest.

If you ask your DM, though, they might be willing to allow you to cast it with a spell slot anyway. Magic Initiate comes from the PHB, one of the original 5e books, but in the years since basically anything that gives a player access to an additional spell also grants them the ability to cast that spell using their spell slots. I'm sure if the feat was published today they would include that detail.

That's quite possible, but I'd say that using the Magic Initiate pseudo-slot for things other than Magic Initiate (which is what the OP was asking about) is a ruling that I've never seen.

Gotcha.
I take it you also wouldn't allow a player to "swap out" the choice of first-level spell when they level?

I would probably allow somebody who's unsatisfied with their spell to swap it out, maybe even before the next level. That'd definitely be going against RAW, though.

Can the level one spell we get from the Magic Initiate be used like any other spell slot?
i.e. If a Paladin had the Feat, could he use it for Smite?
Nope. It's not a spell slot, just a free casting of a spell once per long rest.

Oh lol I totally misunderstood the question. Yeah, that's definitely a bridge too far to me... even if it is just a single 1st level spell slot.
