Hello I am new and am loving the flavor of College of valor for bards. But I noticed that bards dont start off with shields.
How does a valor bard get a shield? Does it gain the shield when I choose the college of valor cause it is proficient with a shield? Does it also get another weapon cause it becomes proficient with martial weapons (started mine with rapier)? Not really that familiar with the rules
When you create your character, you receive equipment based on a combination of your class and background. Alternatively, you can start with a number of gold pieces based on your class and spend them on items from the lists in the Equipment chapter.

Yes you get shield, medium armor, and martial weapon proficiency at 3rd level when you pick College of Valor as your subclass.
You buy it from a merchant. With gold pieces. Stores exist in D&D.
Oh okay, thank you so much. Very helpful.
Having a proficiency doesn't automatically give you the relevant tool/weapon/armor. You have to find/buy it.
