One of my players is playing a hexblade Warrior/pact of the blade with improved pact weapon.
They had originally set their pact weapon as a glaive, but are now using the spider staff from LMoP as their pact weapon.
When they're rolling, they use the damage from the staff (treating as quarter-staff 2 handed which is 1d8), right? We use roll 20 and they're still using the glaive's stats, which I don't think is right. We're not seeing eye to eye on the wording.
1) Everyone is correct - you can't treat it as a glaive. Either you create your choice of pact weapon or you use whatever specific weapon you have made into your pact weapon. It isn't mix and match.
2) Improved pact weapon DOES apply to the spider staff. It does not have a + modifier so you can still add the +1 modifier from improved pact weapon to the staff to hit/damage so the base damage when used with two hands is d8+1 (+d6 poison)
3) The staff has charges that let you cast spider climb or web BUT only if these spells appear on your class list of spells. For a warlock, they can cast spider climb using the staff but not web since web is not a warlock spell (that I could find).
Hey y'all!

Yeah, nothing about hexblade/blade pact indicates that when you attack with one weapon you use a different one's stats.
You can change your pact weapon, but it does exactly that: changes your pact weapon to the new weapon.
If they're using a quarterstaff, it does quarterstaff damage.
Thanks for the confirmation that I wasn't missing something!
Yeah, so to be clear about pact weapon:
They can either create any melee weapon they want from nothing, OR make any existing magic weapon their pact weapon.
Since they are making an existing magic weapon their pact weapon, they can't choose its form.
A couple of additional comments.

Oooh, that's a good catch about the spells! I hadn't even realised that it was only spells on your class spell list.
That restriction is specific to that particular magic item. Other items may not have the same constraint.
