Again with the simple stuff I'm afraid, joys of last playing during 3.5ed
Dming for my teenagers, one of my players has talked about multiclassing already, I can't find any rules for what happens if a Spellcaster later becomes proficient in armour, can they use armour and still cast spells? We're using full 5e core rules phb, DMG, monster manual, but no additional resources yet.
Note, Elven Chain grants proficiency for it's own use merely by putting it on. It is medium armor Chain Shirt +1 to AC (on top of the normal dex and chain shirt ac) that anyone can wear, not heavy Chain Mail. If your Dex is 14 or higher, it grants 13+1+2=16.
It is the best armor a single class wizard can wear.

That's a good point that I hadn't thought of. I need to make a note of that.
If you happen to be a bladesinger, you still can't dance in medium armor even if you are proficient (to my endless disappointment).

Im sure it's obvious but I can't find it...
Thanks
If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.
This.
There are no special rules for where the proficiency comes from or it being treated different for being gained later.
Just be aware that proficiencies gained from multiclassing are not the same as level 1 single class. It is all laid out in the multiclassing rules.
