Hi, I'm trying to find the answer to a question that arose at a session yesterday. Can't find anything searching, so I try here.
I am running a high level campaign, five players, all level 17. The campaign will get them to 20 and still go on. I know a lot of people say high level dnd is broken, and I guess my experience agree with that, but that doesn't mean it ain't fun, just.. different. Lot more roleplaying in my experience. And it's with this I hit a snag yesterday.
I have one barbarian, a dwarf with the Path of the Totem Warrior - Bear. At level 15 he got "Persistent Rage: Beginning at 15th level, your rage is so fierce that it ends early only if you fall uncounscious or if you choose to end it".
So, here's my issue. The player roleplays a lot, and is one of the more talkative in the group. He is usually roleplaying in a calm demenour, and nothing changed about that. But yesterday, after a few days on the road he got the tongue of a mimic up his a** (the mimic was pretending to be a bench) and restrained him in that way. He claimed he was raging, because a few days ago (in game, and a week in real life) he activated rage and never stopped it. So here he is, several days later, several nights of sleep later, relaxing with fishing and sitting down on a bench appearently all raging. It just seems too weird for me. We had a discussion and agreed I check it out before next session.
Here's what I think: I think he might technically be correct if you are a RAW-sort of DM. The question is if you are uncounscious if you sleep, but the rule says "fall unscounscious", implying by force, not by voluntarily by sleeping. And he never chose to end it.
But in a RAI-sort of way I think he is wrong, cause this couldn't possibly be the intention. If so, Rage is just a feature every barbarian has, nothing a barbarian ever needs to think about after hitting level 15, so why get an extra rage in level 17? He understands "Persistent Rage" as if he now controls the rage in such a manner that he can walk around basically containting the rage, and releasing it whenever needed. I understands it as you are now so f****** angry when you rage so it doesn't matter if you gets hit or not, you are not in any danger of loosing your rage in a battle, and even not in between fights in for example a dungeon crawl. But still, when you are putting your head down on a pillow and go to sleep, your rage dissapate.
But I am a RAF-sort of DM. I want him to actually roleplay as angry if he's gonna go around raging constantly. That could be funny, but he won't do that (understandably), as previous stated, he understands it as if he now has the rage under control. I want him to have fun, and he has stated he finds it so nice to not have to think about Rage anymore. But for me the whole thing just doesn't make any sense. Either you have to accept you are not going around 24/7 raging, or you need to roleplay more angry. You cannot go around raging 24/7 at the same time as you are roleplaying as a calm, curious nice guy. Plus, as a RAF-sort of DM I am also wanting to have some fun. I don't find this solution particularly fun. He is already an incredibly strong character, and honestly doesn't need this technically. But for me it's the roleplaying aspect that ruins it a bit for me.
"Your rage lasts for 1 minute." is the "regular" end of a rage. All the fall unconcious etc. stuff makes the rage end earlyer. So the 17 feature doesn't let you continue forever, just for that minute.
Yeah, Sutlo is correct. Rage lasts for a minute - before Persistent Rage, a barb would need to either attack or be attacked every round to keep up rage for the minute, or else it would stop. Persistent Rage just makes it so they maintain it for a full minute no matter what (unless they choose to drop early).

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
Beginning at 15th level, your rage is so fierce that it ends early only if you fall unconscious or if you choose to end it.
See the underlined word.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

As others have said the Barbarian feature Persistent Rage does not change Rage's maximum duration of one minute.
However at level 20 the per long rest limit on Rage becomes unlimited. So at that point they could stay in a near constant state of Rage at the cost of one bonus action per minute. So for a group that likes to roleplay a lot it may be worth thinking and talking about what that would look like.

What do you say? Any tips on this?

Thanks! So silly, we got so focused on the Persistent Rage, both of us completely forgot to read on Rage itself...
