How about that: an invisible caster (f.e. a bard) with a lil' dash of rogue - is it possible to cast "mighty invisibility" on him and make a sneak attack by casting a direct "attack" spell?
Simply read the description of the power: "The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon."
So no spell, obviously.
Booming blade or green flame blade could* work, but nothing else currently. Notably, the arcane trickster subclass does have a magical ambush feature at level 9 (probably not what you're going for).
Yes, I'm playing a character who makes good use of Booming Blade Sneak Attacks. Attacks made by Steel Wind Strike and Swift Quiver should also allow Sneak Attack as long as the weapon used is finesse or ranged.
I would not allow it for Steel Wind Strike as it is a spell attack, and therefore not with a weapon (contrary to Booming blade and Green Flame Blade which say "You brandish the weapon used in the spell’s casting and make a melee attack with it"), and swift quiver is a bit different but would be OK.
That's a valid interpretation, though I think it's also reasonable to interpret that Steel Wind Strike uses the weapon component to actually make the attack as part of casting the spell.

Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua ferita ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!
It's obviously not a blade cantrip nor does it seem like it's supposed to be somehow derived from them so there would be differences, wouldn't there? But like I said, your interpretation is definitely a valid one, I see your reasoning.

I can imagine some people arguing that “instead of the weapon’s normal damage” means “instead of sneak attack damage” as well, but I don’t think that’s a valid interpretation. I think a lightning arrow attack can definitely deliver a sneak attack, as long as the other requirements are met.

Yeah, that should work as long as you hit and don't miss. The sneak damage would be lightning too, which is cool.

I'd say that it isn't seeing as it tells you to make a melee spell attack.

The spell transforms the weapon into a bold of lightning, so it is no longer a weapon, so doesn't qualify for sneak attack damage.

It is still an attack with a ranged weapon though. The spell doesn't change that. Just the effect of hit/miss.

Casting a spell is casting a spell not making an attack.
I don't think it's possible. (Except if a DM allows it.)

*if used with a finesse weapon.
ok thx

It would work for a Lightning Arrow attack right?
