By default very little can affect items you are wearing or holding in Rules As Written; while your DM could insist on realistic tracking of everything you're carrying, and how you're carrying it, in practical terms this would just bog down the game, I don't think it's something you're supposed to worry about much.
I think it's fair to assume that adventurers favour pouches etc. that are reasonably durable, probably double wrap vulnerable items to be reasonably water proof etc. It's then up to your DM if they want to go further with it or not, but if you want to hand wave it away another option is to just say "I spend my long rest checking my gear is as water tight as I can make it" or such.

Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
Lets say you have a bag of holding or really anything with extra dimensional space inside it.
If the lid or opening is tightly closed would the contents stay dry if dropped in water.
We have been paying that they do stay dry but I just wanted to confirm it.

Thanks.
Just making sure.
