Does anyone know if the spell jammer helm needs the vessel to have a type of engine or some sort of mechanical function that could propel itself? Me and some guys just reached lv10, and im a bard so i was looking through magical secrets and that was there. Cuz im wondering if i could just slap it on a carriage, or if i would need to put something like crude pistons or stuff. Cuz i saw some listing of oar barrels getting attached, but in the descript it seemed like there was just hide stretching to move the oars, so what the bare minimum that a vessel of the helm needs to be able to propel itself.

It does not. We have example ships that have no such thing, like a Tyrant Ship.

RAW a spelljamming helm only does something useful on a "ship", which is not a defined game term. RAW it also won't work on land even though we have ships with a land speed, like a Scorpion Ship - and even if your DM fixes it so helms work on Scorpion Ships and so on properly, there's no way to know what speed to expect from a "cart", even if your DM rules that a cart counts as a ship. All of the Spelljamming Ships we have have speeds apparently independent of everything else, including the helm and the spelljammer at the helm - i.e. all of their speeds are arbitrary values WOTC assigned.

Nothing. As I noted above, you can literally pilot a rock using a spelljamming helm, provided the rock counts as a ship.
