Hi all I’ve found myself in a confusing situation. Basically my question is can you place the 10 cubes in a checker board pattern (corner to corner) and it be like a proper spell cast

No. Fire storm says each effected cube must share a side with another effected cube. Corners are not enough.

Each cube must have at least one face adjacent to the face of another cube.
