If a character gets attacked by a fireball, he can take half damage by making the DEX save. Also, if a character has armor of fire resistance, he takes only half damage, even if fully nailed by the fireball.
Question: What if the character both has fire resistance and also makes the DEX save? Would you give him one-fourth damage? Or would you give him no damage?
1/4 damage, being caught in a Fireball while having fire resistance means you first determine how much damage is dealt (full or half) then you halve the amount of damage taken.

The key line in the Fireball text is "A target takes 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one." The spell only deals half the damage roll if you make the saving throw. Resistance to Fire damage halves the damage you're dealt. So if the caster rolled 32, making the save means you're only dealt 16 points of Fire damage, which Fire Resistance would reduce to 8.
Resistance and then vulnerability are applied after all other modifiers to damage. For example, a creature has resistance to bludgeoning damage and is hit by an attack that deals 25 bludgeoning damage. The creature is also within a magical aura that reduces all damage by 5. The 25 damage is first reduced by 5 and then halved, so the creature takes 10 damage.
So in this example, you would first determine that they're taking 8d6 and roll it. Then you would determine that they take half because they succeeded. Then you would determine that they take half of that because of their resistance.

They are both division modifiers, not subtractive modifiers. Its [damage] ÷2 ÷2 = [1/4 damage], not [damage] -[1/2 damage] -[1/2 damage] = 0.
1/2 * 1/2 is 1/4, not 0.

That makes sense. Thanks so much, everyone.
