I’m creating a character for a campaign coming up, his backstory is that he was raised by two edgelord parents who gave him a dark and intimidating name. He then ran away to join a cult, then picked a name for himself. If he gives the party his new name, would he have to roll for deception? Would he have to roll every time he used his new name?
Would the party have any reason to doubt him? There really is no reason for deception checks to be made, imo.
If I came up to you and said, “Hi, I’m Bob” would you be automatically suspicious? it’s not Bob, by the way, but you wouldn’t know that and doubt you would think I was lying. Now if I came to you and said my name was Sir Ronald McDonald McLovin then maybe.
It will be up to your DM. Personally, I wouldn’t require a roll. The way you’re describing, it sounds not like a fake name, but a new name, or a second name. Both names are you, so it’s not really deceptive.

As long as it is the name he actually uses for himself then I don't see a reason for it.

If you take the charlatan background you get a false identity
You can have a false identity regardless of your background. It's up to you and your DM to work out an acceptable backstory and personality.
