There are many spells with a range of touch, and I wanted to make a class ability which allows you to cast such spells as a part of a bare fisted punch. I just wanted to make sure this wasnt already the case? can you cast spells with a range of touch in addition to a punch
If the intention of the punch is to deal damage, then no, this not the case. punching someone would require you take the Attack action, while casting a touch spell is not. as for giving this ability, I don't think it would be too strong, as a normal punch is 1+str mod damage, so it wouldn't amount to much. there are a few cases where this could be increased, but those all either require a feat that probably could be spent on a needed ASI at low levels, or a better feat a high levels, though by high levels an increase that would be available would probably not matter anyway. the othe roption would be to take a class dip into a fighter/monk, but neither of those have spell progression (eldritch knight does, but realistically, 2 levels in fighter for unarmed fighting style, second wind, and action surge is what you want to take AT MOST) delaying spell progression by 3 or more levels is too big a hit too a full spellcaster, especially since that means you wouldn't get 9th level spells, which are jsut too good to pass up. all this is speaking from an optimisation standpoint. from a roleplay standpoint, a "punch" wizard, so to speak, could be interesting, but what class is this ability intended for? If it is a wizard or other squishy caster, then it would be practically suicide to use this ability.

A spell with a range of touch connect automatically unless it specifically require an attack roll or saving throw. Either way, it's done as part of it's own action to cast the spell, and not as part of the action to make an unarmed strike.
So say for exemple you want to make an unarmed strike or cast Shocking grasp or Bestow curse, you will have to decide wether you take the Attack action or the Cast a Spell action to do so.
You can always ask the DM if you could roleplay the spell's touch motion to be punch-like, but that wouldn't be considered a hit or cause additional damage outside what the spell already does.

RAW this is irrelevent but if you are allowed to homebrew that you can "punch" to both damage and cast a touch spell you best option to get more damage is through your race:
Many creatures (e.g. Centaurs and tortles) have natural weapons while not an "unarmed strike" they do involve touching the target. The think the best you can do here is 1d6+str
If you target a creature that hasn't taken their turn yet a bugbear can add 2d6 to the damage (though this would be a maximum of once per combat unless you have action surge)

Can’t the mercy monk heal with a punch from their flurry of blows? That’s kind of like a spell.
No it isn't anything close to a spell. It's a class feature that allows you to spend Ki-points to heal someone you touch (touch not punch).
