I feel like because they use the word "can" in the sentence, there leaves a little tiny sliver of ambiguity where you could interpret that to mean that you can trance for less than, or more than the 4 hours as well, you just need at least 4 to get the benefits of a long rest.
I realize I'm being a little pedantic here, but was just wondering if this has ever been questioned or addressed before
Text for trance for context:
Elf Trance
Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
Eladrin Trance
You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in a trancelike meditation, during which you retain consciousness.
Whenever you finish this trance, you can change your season, and you can gain two proficiencies that you don’t have, each one with a weapon or a tool of your choice selected from the Player’s Handbook. You mystically acquire these proficiencies by drawing them from shared elven memory, and you retain them until you finish your next long rest.
To be totally transparent, I’m trying to be cheeky about Eladrin’s season changes.
“After you finish *this* trance” - does that imply specifically 4 hours, no more, no less? Or is it just being “in a trance”, in which case how long you have to trance for comes into play.
I.e. could I season change during a short rest, if I trance for a short-rest amount of time? Assuming I didn’t change seasons already after a long rest that day, since it says season-changes last until your next long rest.
again, I realize I’m being pedantic lol but just wanted to ask and see if anyone else has thought of this

You're asking if you're allowed to meditate during downtime for no benefit?

Every sentence after the first explains Trance as it pertains to substituting a long rest.
