Hi all... I made a character that I am about to debut in a campaign... it's a 10th level character, wizard8/cleric2 on the dndbeyond character sheet, I seem to have access to 5th level spells, which I should only get when I reach level 9 in wizard.
is there a rule or item in my inventory that allows for this to happen, or is this a bug? here's the link to my character... https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/101243056/IFjKtZ The character is entirely unmodified from basic rules and the books, except for having received 1 extra feat at level 1. could one of the feats be the culprit? a magic item? I can't think of a reason why the 5th level slots are open... I also can't, rightfully so, pick a 5th level spell to learn, so that seems to confirm that I should not have access to them. It is the first time in a long while that I play a wizard at a mid level range, and the first time I mix cleric with wizard, so... where's the issue? is it rules or software? thanks for the help
That looks to be correct. Both Wizards and Clerics are spellcasters so when you multiclass them you add their levels together when deciding your spellslots. The rules for it are here -> PHB - multiclassing.
Do not that you choose/prepare your spells for each class individually so you should only be able to pick up to lvl 4 spells for the Wizard and lvl 1 spell for the Cleric (which also seems to be correct on your sheet).
I figured that the spell progression would be limited to the highest slot my highest caster could attain... then again, In all these years playing, I don't know that I ever multiclassed across 2 full casters.. thanks for the clarification.
yeah, if you play two full caster classes as a multi-class, such as Wizard, Sorcerer, Druid, Bard and Cleric, then your total level is where your spell casting slots would be. The highest level of what your multiclass is will be the one to set the actual level you can cast though. For Example, a level 12 character with Sorceror10, and Bard2 would have access to 1 6th level slot from your Level, but as only a 10th level Sorcerer, you cant get a 6th level spell, but you can always use that spell slot as an upcasted spell.

Slots of higher level than you have spells are still useful because of upcasting
