So during I game a was dming a player casted spiritual weapon, then next turn cast sanctuary now sanctuary "If the warded creature makes an attack, casts a spell that affects an enemy, or deals damage to another creature, this spell ends." So wouldn't the attack from spiritual weapon be considered damage from a spell attack because you use your spell attack bonus to try and hit and enemy.
Generally speaking I'd call any effect that originates with the warded creature and deals damage something that ends the effect; so even setting up passive/reactive "at the start of a creature's turn" or "the first time a creature enters the affected space".

You will notice in the text for spiritual weapon that the caster is still making the attack.
