So, I have an Artificer and I was thinking of imbuing his little rice/conical hat or his boots with the light tinkering:
Magical Tinkering: At 1st level, you learn how to invest a spark of magic into mundane objects. To use this ability, you must have thieves’ tools or artisan’s tools in hand. You then touch a Tiny nonmagical object as an action and give it one of the following magical properties of your choice:
The object sheds bright light in a 5-foot radius and dim light for an additional 5 feet.
So, the question I have is that, can my Artificer tap his lamp hat or boots on and off when needed or is it constantly on? It would be cool because it basically is the 'light bulb meme' or the 'glowing sneakers meme' haha. Please let me know, thank you!

Well, the ability's description doesn't say anything about being able to turn it off or on, but I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to turn it off as an action the same way you can activate it. I'd check with your GM about how they interpret it, though.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
RAW, it doesn't come with a switch, but it's a minor enough thing that I reckon most DMs would allow it. Anyways, you could probably use the ability on a smaller part of the hat/boots and then have some sort of cover that you could use to variably cover the light and let it shine through.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

Gotcha! Going to double check with the GM. I really hope they say yes because I cannot wait to pull out the meme references haha. Thanks so much for answering.

Amazing, if my DM says no switch, I think I can add a little bobble at the top of the hat and I can put a thick cloth cover on top of it or I can imbue the buckles on the tall boots and just cover it with one of those really thick boot cuffs so when it is time to be used I can just pull the boot cuffs up!
Thank you for your help!

The Magical Tinkering feature can't be turned on/off in itself. Instead,
- You touch a Tiny nonmagical object as an action and make it shed bright light:
- The property lasts indefinitely. As an action, you can touch the object and end the property early.
- You can bestow magic on multiple objects, touching one object each time you use this feature, though a single object can only bear one property at a time. The maximum number of objects you can affect with this feature at one time is equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of one object). If you try to exceed your maximum, the oldest property immediately ends, and then the new property applies.
Basically, since you're able to touch these items, yes, you can turn them on or off whenever you touch them. You can also turn them off by tinkering other items so the property ends. But, to turn them on again you'd be starting a new Magical Tinkering.
Let's say your intelligence modifier is 3.
So let's say you want to make your hat a light. Cool! You tap it on, it's a light. You tap it off, you end the effect. You can have 3 items active so your sneakers can also be lit plus one other thing.
Alternately, you tap the hat on, and give the hat to a friend, and they have a light. They can't turn it off. You can only turn it off by touching it again OR by tinkering 3 other items so the property ends. So you might for example tinker 3 ball bearings with something to turn it off, then turn off the three ball bearings, if your purpose was to just turn the original item off.
There's no distance in the property, so it doesn't matter how far away your friend goes with the Hat of Light.

Does tapping it off ends the effect permanently? What I mean is that, do I have to do Magical Tinkering on it again to turn it on? (I mean, I can have 4 items 'active' so I can turn it on and off 4 times right?)
(Thanks for answering btw!)

Yes, there's not a switch. It's just either tinkered or not tinkered. When it's off it's not reserved in any way.
And there's no cost for using it so other than that only 4 items can have an effect, you can turn the effects on and off all you want. Just remember the order because if you tinker a 5th item it's the first item that fails.
There are a lot of great uses for this ability. I know Magical Tinkering gets dissed in a lot of the guides but it can be used creatively to save your bacon or transmit information in some unexpected ways. I love your glowing hat and sneakers plan too.
