I like the newly modified goliath species. Giving them more giant flavor. Although I must be to dumb to not grasp why there can't be a large sized player race. Aside from my tempest domain cleric idea for a goliath, has anyone given serious thought to gliath class builds that are not warrior, paladin or barbarian?
I think a big reason why there aren't any permanently Large playable species is that Large creatures take up four squares on a classic 5-foot grid map, meaning that there are an enormous number of maps out there that a Large player character will have difficulty navigating.

In the 2014 rules I've had quite a bit of fun with a Wildfire Druid. He was a Goliath that went on a walkabout looking for answers and sat talking to to the campfire at night and one day the fire answered and out popped the wildfire spirit.
@ThinkingDM Visualizing one of @JeremyECrawford's reasons why Centaur and Minotaur should not be Large PCs: a 5' aura is 50% bigger and a 10' aura is 33% bigger. @JeremyECrawford That's exactly right. @ThinkingDM Is it safe to assume we shouldn’t expect Large PC races? @JeremyECrawford Yep.
I would agree at first look, that the druid would be good for the goliath. The newer giant decendant goliath has more elemental flavor. Thank you for the suggesting this avenue of playnstyle.

It also significantly buffs the area of emanation effects
Another reason could be related to Areas of Effect, where certain areas, like Emanation, might be more advantageous for permanently Large creatures.
EDIT: I got ninja'd by @The_Ace_of_Rogues!
