There are several ways to swap weapons without using your Action to do so. The Utilize action is an Action. In other words, it takes an action to don or doff a shield since properly wielding a shield involves strapping it to your arm.
Thanks. The rules say that you can equip or unequip ONE weapon as part of your attack, which can be done before or after the attack. Equip is unsheating or picking. Unequip is sheating or dropping.
This seems to imply that you can not switch from one weapon to another in the same round, because you need one attack action to drop or sheat and then you must wait for the next attack action to unsheat.
The exact number of weapon interactions you can do is vague and has been hotly debated in this thread, so I'm not going to open that can of worms here. What I will say is that the game designers clearly intend for you to be able to switch to a different weapon at least once, because they made sure to include that in the Combat and Damage Example in chapter 1:
Russell: I drop my sword and pull out my warhammer. Time to break some bones! My first attack is a 21 to hit for 7 Bludgeoning damage.

They say one weapon interaction per attack you make as part of the attack action, which could be several.
Because you also get a free object interaction, you can swap from one weapon to another fairly easily.
This is off-topic for this thread, so if you want to argue about the weapon-interaction rules, it should be taken to one of the other threads that have already hashed this out repeatedly.

Hi all.
I'm searching through the new PH and I can't find an indication of the time required to don and doff an armor.
It's in the armor table. Look at the rows with the armor categories.

Ah, great, thank you very much!
I read all the chapter up and down twice and I didn't focus on the table itself!
I notice, though, it that the book does not specify the Utilize action for shields.
Is it an errata or some sort of default? Is it the same action needed to swap weapons?
That's in the table too :)
