This is a complete noob question, sorry. Trying to learn the Starter Set to run for my kids.
p.21 'Known and Prepared Spells' states that a character can change this list of of prepared spells upon finishing a long rest. But the next sentence then says they can prepare a new list of spells given 1 minute per spell level for each spell on the list. So, using the High-elf Wizard pre-gen who has a spell book of six spells and 4xL1 spell slots this implies they can change their list of prepared spells in no more than four minutes. But the first sentence in that rule block says it should require a long rest (8 hours).
Is there a nuance I'm missing here? I can't see when it should take 8 hours and when it should take 4 minutes.
I agree. I think the long rest requirement is the most important. I only strongly enforce time limits for casting rituals and spells cast in a time sensitive context like initiative order, not for preparation
Yes, both are true. It only takes a few minutes at level one, but those few minutes must be at the end of a long rest.
Essentially, you can change your prepared spells once a day, at the beginning of the day.
Where does it say in the rules that it can only be changed at the beginning of the day? I agree it can be changed once a day but at a specific time period, I have yet to see that rule?
Well, the adventuring day for most people doesn’t start while they’re resting.
Agree, but I would not want to mislead a new dm by indicating such change could only occur at the beginning of the day or morning which one could infer.

It doesn't have to be at the beginning of the day. It has to be at the end of a long rest. Those two tend to coincide but it isn't required.

OK, got it. Thanks.
I don't think anyone actually keeps up with the amount of minutes it takes to change spells each morning.
