Good evening, everyone. Is there anything specific that says a dragon's breath weapon has to be used through their mouth? Or some reason why it couldn't be used through their nose instead? Just looking for more options for my dragons, if possible.
The key word is "exhale", so if it originates with "breath", then it should be kosher, regardless of the orifice. However, don't let that stop you from exploring more creative alternatives. Minor magic items (homebrew) could easily transform it in many different ways.
So if the dragon has loose eyeballs and holds it's nose whilst blowing out, it could have its breath weapon bubble out from behind its eyes.
The option of it coming from its nostrils gives some comedy gold for having a dragon with a cold accidentally spray the party with mucous instead of fire!
The dragon's breath spell specifies it comes from the mouth. The feature in dragons just says they exhale it. Exhaling can occur from basically any orifice :)
Really it's up to you and your DM. There aren't many ways to exploit this feature, in fact I can only think of one:
You can still use your breath weapon while gagged as a hostage. But that's literally the only mechanical difference I can think of.
So it's up to you. Even if your DM says no, feel free to imagine your Dragonborn to be sneezing fire in combat, since it won't affect anything mechanically.
I’d say go crazy. As long as you don’t change the mechanics — damage type, range, whether it’s a line or cone or whatever — and as long as the characters get their appropriate saves, the rest is just flavor. Some versions may seem more “believable” than others, but that’s up to the way things work in your world.

Hmm. No, I don't believe there is. Go for it.

I know this is selective quoting, but I'm going to leave this here for the comedy value...
I wouldn't really call it a breath weapon at that point. It would just be element spilling into its eyes. Probably a bad idea.
I'm sure more than one DM has had the breath weapon comes from... the other end
As a surprise you could have the dragon phart out it breath weapon

In hindsight, I realize I misread your question. But the answer is still yes. I'm going to leave my original comment here anyways.
No, that's totally fine. You actually answered something I had in the back of my head for a hostage that's been bound and gagged, so thanks for that.
A dragon exhaling fire from its nostrils - completely fine.
A dragon exhaling lightening from its nostrils - weird but okay.
A dragon exhaling acid from its nostrils - that's crossing the line.
