Does anyone know of a version of the "Earth Glider" that exists for 5e? Or any other monster with the ability to bring riders with it to earth glide? If not, how might one go about converting a monster like this? Because this is for use with polymorph my main concern is figuring out what CR this creature would be in 5e? We've got a evil wizard in the form of a purple worm trying to escape through the ground and we got to stop him!
Alternatively, any monster with a burrowing speed above 30ft (the higher the better) that could feasibly carry multiple passenger while actively burrowing would work.
I disagree with the above poster about burrowing speed. There is no indication that faster burrowing speeds somehow allow any riders let alone multiple riders. If you’re the DM, of course, you can rule otherwise.
I’d be more likely to point the party to something like an Ankheg, which has the tunneler ability so it could burrow and excavate a path for the rest of the party to walk along.
(1) Using HB to circumvent a challenge your DM set you requires a huge amount of DM buy-in so make sure they are ok with the idea before taking the time to generate stats for it.
(2) It would be much simpler to find some RAW beast with burrowing ability and ask the DM if they would allow that burrow to be a tunnel that the rest of the party could follow behind.
(3) If you are high enough level to fight a wizard that can True Polymorph into a purple worm, you should have other options to such as teleportation and scrying to chase after them.

This is the page I found for the 3e Earth Glider: https://www.realmshelps.net/monsters/block/Earth_Glider

It's less so that we are very high level (we are level 8) and more so that there are a bunch of us. We are usually a party of 7.
