I was looking at the adventuring gear, and the Dungeoneer's pack stuck out to me. A backpack can hold Approximately 30 pounds, (as stated on page 153 of PHB). Yet the contents of the Dungeoneer's pack weigh almost double that amount (55.5 pounds). So, mechanically, where does all that stuff go?
Yeah, I was infantry for a few years, and having that much weight on the outside of the pack is not unusual. However, it's better to strap it on top of the pack, carrying it that way is easier due to better balance.
Keep in mind too that there are a number of items in the pack that may or may not have excessive weights .. depends on how much "realism" you want to get into .. most people I have met do not play with detailed encumbrance and weight rules since many lower strength characters can't carry even a standard pack, their armour and weapons without being encumbered.
- 50ft of hemp rope - 10lbs
- 10 days worth of rations - 20 lbs
- 10 torches - 10 lbs
- crowbar - 5 lbs
- waterskin - 5 lbs
Also, the dungeoneer's pack does not include a bedroll or mess kit ... which I personally think are essential for ANY type of adventure ... so I usually go with the explorer's pack :)
It does say that bedrolls and rope can easily be strapped on the outside or top of the pack.

Hello,

Hanging off the outside of it?
That's 25 pounds hanging of the side.

Oh, ok, thanks for the help!
